What We Are Learning
Setting the right foundations
During their early years, children develop rapidly — building the essential skills, knowledge, and confidence that form the foundation of lifelong learning. At New Beginnings, our “Watch Us Grow” curriculum is carefully designed to support children’s development while making learning exciting, meaningful, and fun.
We follow the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which is organised into seven key areas of learning:
Prime Areas
These are vital for children’s future learning and wellbeing:
- Communication and Language – speaking, listening, understanding
- Physical Development – movement, coordination, self-care, healthy living
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development – relationships, confidence, managing emotions
Specific Areas
These extend and deepen children’s learning:
- Literacy – early reading, storytelling, mark making and writing skills
- Mathematics – counting, number sense, shape, pattern and problem-solving
- Understanding the World – exploring people, places, nature, community and technology
- Expressive Arts and Design – creativity, music, art, role play and imaginative thinking
How we Teach
Children learn best through:
- Play-based experiences
- Hands-on exploration
- Real-life, meaningful activities
- Positive relationships with caring adults
Our environment encourages children to:
- Try new things
- Take safe, supported risks
- Ask questions and share ideas
- Build independence and resilience
- Discover their own strengths and interests
We also explicitly teach essential learning behaviours — such as curiosity, focus, perseverance and problem-solving — helping children understand how they learn, not just what they learn.
