Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH)

What is COSHH?

The law says we must control exposure to substances that could harm health. This is called the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH).

In a nursery, this includes things like:

  • Cleaning products (bleach, sprays, disinfectants)
  • Nappy changing products
  • Bodily fluids (e.g. vomit, blood)
  • Any chemicals used for maintenance

To keep everyone safe, we must:

  • Use products safely and as instructed
  • Store chemicals securely and out of children’s reach
  • Follow cleaning procedures carefully
  • Use protective equipment if needed (e.g. gloves, aprons)
  • Wash hands regularly

You should always:

  • Only use approved products
  • Never mix cleaning chemicals
  • Report spills, leaks, or concerns to a manager

Following COSHH helps protect both staff and children from harm and keeps the nursery a safe environment..

Guide to COSHH

COSHH risk assessment

A COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) risk assessment is a detailed examination of the hazards and risks associated with using substances in the workplace, specifically those that are hazardous to health. It's a type of risk assessment required by law and focuses on preventing or controlling exposure to these substances to protect workers.
