NSPCC screen time guides

For children under the age of five, technology can offer fun and support learning. It also brings risks. Children at this age are curious, quick to click, and unable to recognise danger.

That’s why parents and carers play a vital role in making screen time safe, purposeful, and age appropriate.

How we support screen time at nursery

At New Beginnings , we recognise that relationships, play and communication are the most important ways young children learn and develop. Screen use in our nursery is limited, purposeful and always supported by an adult.

Current guidance recommends:

  • Children under 2 years: avoid screen use wherever possible (except in exceptional circumstances, such as video calls with parents or carers).
  • Children aged 2–5 years: screen use should be limited to no more than one hour per day, with less being better.

Where screens are used in our nursery, they are carefully planned to support specific learning and development outcomes and never replace high-quality interactions, active play or time outdoors.
